Rob Brydon has said he was inspired by The Traitors as the Welsh actor prepares to return to screens as the host of a new game show.

Destination X challenges contestants to figure out a secret location they have been taken to, relying solely on a series of cryptic clues.

The 60-year-old said he wanted to bring a “lightness” to the programme in a similar vein to Claudia Winkleman on the murder mystery hit The Traitors.

The new series features 13 contestants with the winner taking home a prize of £100,000.

Each episode of Destination X will feature clues revealed through a variety of challenges.

Players must pinpoint where they are in Europe with the person furthest from the actual location then eliminated.

To add a touch of mystery, contestants will travel and sleep on a coach with blacked-out windows to disorient them.

The first player to reach the final destination, aka Destination X, will be crowned the winner.

Brydon said he hoped to emulate Winkleman who “gets the balance right” in her role as host of The Traitors.

“I wanted to just be the bridge between the viewer and the contestants, because they are the stars,” he said.

The actor, known for playing Uncle Bryn in Gavin & Stacey, is also embracing a more adventurous style than his fans are used to.

“I’m being a little more experimental with my wardrobe than in the past,” he said.

Contestants should keep a close eye on his attire with his outfit being linked to the region with “little flourishes”, according to Brydon.

The series brings people together from all walks of life including a crime fiction writer and a retired detective sergeant.

“We weren’t scared to put good players in,” said executive producer Dan Adamson.

“It’s rare you get a chance to turn the whole of Europe into a board game,” he added.

Brydon said he was struck by the level of spontaneity and storytelling that unfolded behind the scenes.

“It was fascinating to watch the level of creativity, because I come from a background of narrative,” he said.

“The great thing is also watching how the relationships alter and shift – and how trust is sometimes misplaced between contestants,” he added.

Destination X was created in Belgium and there has also been a US version which aired in May this year.

Destination X begins on Wednesday 30 July at 9pm on BBC One.
